Kim Kashkashian - The Real Deal

Last week I had the good fortune of attending a concert with viola soloist and NEC teacher Kim Kashkashian at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

After giving a master class (missed that one!) earlier in the week, last Thursday she performed in the the Dvořák String Sextet in A Major, Op. 48 with faculty members as well as the Brahms Viola Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2 with faculty member Paul Hersh at the piano.

What an inspiration this concert was for…

My Musical Meditation

The holidays are a joyous time for me. Yet, with all of the busyness and coordination of family gatherings, gift buying, and the like, I notice I feel extra tense this time of year. It’s times like these that I really look forward to meditating. I use meditation as a way to reduce stress, and improve my focus and concentration. There are many ways to meditate. I do a simple breathing meditation. I sit… Continue

Stop. Look. Listen

Recently I’ve been thinking quite a bit about beauty, perception, and the maddening pace at which I and everyone I know seems to be moving these days. Since this has been on my mind so much lately, I’d like to share these thoughts with you as they relate to me as a string player and as someone who is trying to slow down and live more in the moment.

Recently I spent time in a small village in Honduras. In my mind, this was obviously a completely poverty-stricken place. Families were… Continue

‘From the Top’ Continues to Wow

I discovered PBS-TV’s From the Top, the show that features interviews with and performances by the next generation of classical music stars, while flipping through channels one lazy weekend afternoon a few years ago. I was hooked from the first moment I tuned in. I began recording every episode. After awhile though, the busyness of life got in the way, and I stopped recording the shows. I’d still catch them now and then though, and always enjoyed them thoroughly.

One night… Continue

Have You Hugged a Music Teacher Today?

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending my very first American String Teachers Association conference, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia. I was like a kid in a candy store. Everywhere I turned, educators, students, and exhibitors were engaging in lively conversations about teaching and playing string music. I was surrounded by fabulous acoustic and electric instruments, bows, sheet music, strings, rosin, shoulder rests, cases, and much more. As the conference wore on, the Marriott… Continue

Thanks! I've noticed no shortage of groups to play with. I've played both violin and viola in groups, and I like the viola parts better!

Yo CZ,
i like your new picture.i need to update mine.i made a few alterations, etc.ran into an acquiantance of mine from a music store around here , her's is a viola, perhaps. player in the philharmontic, her look at one of my bridges, but her said it wouldn't fit. but as you well know that the bridge has to be "fitted". brother may have a viola and not a violin. her dad use to play for weddings., and i bought a violin and a 3/4 viola from them about 10 year ago or so.there was theceltic festival here a few weeks ago, but my lower back decided to take a vacation, duh?maybe i could make the next atlanta convention.my electric fiddle is smokin all the time from sawin away, etc.

Hi Cindi - I once new a violinist studying with my teacher Joe Leary of Lynn, MA. This violinist's name was Ed Kazarian. I remember playing in the same orchestra as Ed. Are you by chance related? Ed would probably be in his 50s.
Best wishes,

Cindi,

Nice seeing you at ASTA as well! Thanks for the kind words on Yellow and New Slang.....that was a sleepy morning performance I gave, so I'm glad you decided to take them out for a test drive yourself.

Hope to see you and the gang again soon.

Hey Cindi, someone suggested to put them on ebay, but considering these are my very first attempts at luthering the degree of demand may be pretty slim.A well finished piece is worhty of a sale.A quick made piece in a spark of inspiration isn't.I just wanted to prove a point. I'm satisfied with what i've done. It works for me, later on maybe somene else.i just wanted to impress u , that's all. These will be go in a portfoilo to show at a school .
